Statement
An irrepressible urge to create has always been a huge part of who I am. It has found expression in laying stonewalls and designing and building my family’s craftsman style home and straw bale barn/studio. In my mosaic world, working abstractly is a way to satisfy this compulsion. Eliminating representational elements calls for being so much more discerning, more questioning, more spontaneous, more responsive, more bold, more contemplative, more provocative, more complex.
My path to abstraction had humble beginnings. Abstraction is the antithesis of illustration, so how did creating picture books transform into assembling nonfigurative mosaic art? Beginning with a strong background in drawing and design transferred easily into my early mosaic work, best described as whimsical and graphic. Over time my mosaics became more painterly and dynamic, a result of an expanded color palette and more experience with the medium.
Representational work was gradually evolving into semi-abstraction, and I found myself most fascinated by the areas of least realism. One day I made the decision to cross over to a fully abstract approach and the possibilities, challenges and opportunities thus created were a true awakening.
