Ancient Abode

Handmade ceramic tile mosaic with Italian glass smalti tile embedded in mortar on wood.

Imagining how people lived in ancient times led me to create this piece. This work came about while I visualized what a middle class Babylonian citizen's home might have looked like 4,000 years ago. Simple in structure, but ornately decorated, I imagine an archeologist discovering this small artwork with its crumbling tile background, precious stones and ceramics, and lightly brushing thousands of years worth of dust off the surface.
