Statement
Pam Stratton is a contemporary mosaic artist. She does both representational and abstract work, primarily using smalti (hand-made Italian glass) which comes in luscious colors and natural stone. In her modern work, she uses the ancient traditional tools of hammer and hardie to cut the materials. Her work is mostly un-grouted which allows for a mix of materials of uneven thickness that gives it a sculptural quality in which the glass can be angled to reflect the light. She enjoys the variety in size and shape of materials which is evident from her early work of the Twin Lights, to the most recent work on an exterior granite pillar. She receives her inspiration from the breaking of a favored pot or from special moments in nature like watching the ripples across a pond or the marks left in the sand by the outgoing tide. She relishes the exploration of materials and new techniques and often using fossils and minerals in her work. She is never tired of experimenting she is currently incorporating both cold wax & oil paint and encaustic wax in some of her mosaics and sculptures. Her work ranges from large mosaics in trees to mosaic jewelry.
